Imagine: you've just completed an immersive brainstorming and lateral thinking retreat, or you've been to a great conference or event, and you’ve got some brilliant ideas that could really rock the way you do business.
So, what now?
Well, two things generally happen – 1: your ideas are delegated to a project manager, who (unless they have ownership in the ideation process) will likely draw things out and stuff things around, or 2: your team attempts to embark upon the perilous journey of making your new ideas happen together… all the while trying to keep productive on other business-critical tasks. Either way, your new ideas will quickly lose their charm, and are very likely to die.
There is a better way, and it’s called Gamestorming.
It's the essential next step in the innovation process.
Say you have ideas on how to break into new markets, unleash new products, revolutionise your services, or make your business processes more effective. And these ideas are great, but as Edison once said, “Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.” The seed idea is just a small part on the innovation journey.
Einstein once said that “Play is the highest form of research.” Gamestorming is about crafting and playing small but significant games to refine, iterate, prototype and execute ideas. You’ll be like agile ninja scientists – experimenting and adapting your ideas into something that’s very commercially real.
Here’s a model of the Gamestorming process and how it fits into your innovation pipeline.
You may have heard that innovation is “fraught with failure” – and you’ve heard right. Failure is something that’ll undoubtably drop by for a cuppa or two along the way. But with Gamestorming, potential failures can be ironed out early, saving you huge amounts of money, time, embarrassment and all that awkwardness down the track.
And like with any productive creativity session, you’ll want an external facilitator to come in and guide the process – someone who can manage and focus creative tension and focussed attention of your team, break deadlocks and to stimulate new thinking. Essentially, you'll want someone who can work with you to craft the game (experience) that will move your ideas forward.
This is where I come in.
Here’s how it works:
Gamestorming, at its heart, is a hand crafted, uniquely facilitated and playfully productive experience that will move you and your team towards executing your innovative ideas. This is not off-the-shelf stuff on my side of things – this is me applying my expertese and experience in the best way to help you get the ball rolling on your ideas. And it’s going to be mighty fun.
So, first things first – flick me a quick email to say you’re somewhat curious about this gamestorming concept, and give me a quick, rough outline of the context. I'll then get back to you, and if I think I can be of service, we will set up a time to have a quick chat to explore some possibilities. This may result in anything from an intense half-day facilitated gamestorm, right through to a gamestorming adventure that’ll take you right through to launch.
